Progress

This weather. I can’t really take it anymore. The sub-zero cold snap has really got me down. I’m cold to my bones most days, and even my wool socks aren’t able to protect my toes from feeling frostbitten. Everyone seems a little on edge that there’s currently no end in sight for this arctic air.

I’m trying my best to be positive, despite the weather. After going back through my blog, I realized that my 2013 goals post was a little downer for my tastes – full of stress and agitation. I am keeping my nose to the grindstone on my goals, and so far, I’m trudging through the cold and accomplishing a lot while maintaining a positive attitude.

Here’s the progress I’ve made:

  • Fitness: I quit my gym! Even though it was only $10 a month, I just didn’t see the value anymore. The last time I went was over a month ago, and I left feeling… icky. Not because of my workout, but because of the atmosphere. Even before the New Year’s resolution-ers came in I was getting bad vibes. I feel like I’ve hit my stride with yoga classes (going 3-6 times a week), lifting weights at home, and once it’s nice out I’d love to get back into walking more. I’ve also been good about drinking more water and tea – I’ve been hooked on Yogi “Bedtime” Tea and making my own apple cider vinegar “tea” a couple times a day.
  • Financial: I paid off my credit card, contributed to a 401K for the first time (With a 9% match! Holy buckets!), AND opened up a Roth IRA account. I have my sub-savings accounts all set up for automatic withdrawal, and charted on my Excel spreadsheet for the entire year. I feel solid in my financial house. I’m so lucky! Not sure I’m in any position to purchase a couch, but I’ll just keep waiting and saving.
  • Relationships: Pete and I went on a date to see jazz legend Dave Holland and his quintet last night. Pete cooked us a delicious stir fry for dinner, I made cookies for dessert, we got all dressed up and enjoyed amazing music from some of the most talented jazz musicians playing and touring today. Today I’m going on a girl’s day-date with my mom, auntie, sister, and cousin. I’m looking forward to thrifting and catching up with some of my favorite people.
  • Home and Hobbies: Well, I’m definitely blogging more regularly (three days off will do that to a person), and lighting candles every night. I’m going to brainstorm a few DIY projects, because I’m feeling a creative itch. I’m going to make it a goal to either read or create something over the next two weeks instead of watching Netflix every night.
  • Work Life: I’m getting caught up at work after feeling like I was falling behind. I really hated feeling so down on myself. I was anxious and SUPER stressed out about work both before and after the holidays. I resented going into work and not accomplishing a single thing on my to-do list. I’ve since voiced my concern with my supervisors, sorted out my project priorities, and talked through a plan of attack. I feel much more calm and in control. I’m actually looking forward to quite a few of these projects, like our upcoming brochure design.

I hope you’re having a good weekend. Mine’s been in progress since Wednesday night, and I feel awfully lucky and pretty darn happy about it!

Woof

Apparently, I tweeted the word “Woof” on Saturday night/Sunday morning. Absolutely no recollection of doing so, which kind of sums up at least part of my night out with the girls. What I DO remember (prior to 3am) is catching up on gossip, delicious Thai food, drink drinks drinks, creeper dude at the bar, great show, talking with the band afterward, and wandering the streets looking for our lost car. Fun times!

Here’s the band we saw: Woods at the Turf Club. Really good vibes.

What wasn’t really fun times was waking up and being sick. Really sick. I definitely learned my lesson (seems to happen about once a year). But after a bit of toast and a nice long nap, I felt mucho better. Now the only side-effect is wanting to eat everything in sight. Oh well. I can deal.

Happy Fall

Hi friends. Looks like I’m on a one post a month spree, huh?

I hope all is well. Things are busy around here, as always. The weather just took a turn toward real MN fall. We did have a few Indian summer nights and beautiful, sunny, vivid-leaf days. But now the wind has picked up, the leaves area bit more brown, and the air is MUCH cooler. I kind of like it, but I’m a jeans and sweater person at the core of my being, so this weather is kind of perfect.

Some pictures of life lately. I did manage to buy some mums and gourds for the front stoop. They’re now living in my garage for fear of frost. Not sure when the cold front will break (if at all) but it was nice to enjoy them even for a couple of weeks.

I also had the opportunity to stretch my artsy skills by painting the co-op windows for fall. The big art festival in town was last weekend. I learned how to operate the cash register, and I finally became a full-fledged member after only a year of supporting them but not buying in. I feel much happier now with my membership investment firmly in their hands. It was just in time for their capital campaign (which I helped design the theme for – yay)!

Other things that are new in my life:

  • YOGA. Yoga yoga yoga! I’ve been going to the new studio in downtown St. Cloud for a whole month now. I wake up at 5:45am most mornings for the 6:30am strong class. I’ll write a separate post on it soon. I have a lot of things to say about my experiences on the mat!
  • Plasma. I started donating plasma recently after a coworker let on about how easy (and profitable) it was. I was initially a little skeeved out by the process (it made me feel very anxious), but I’ve calmed down.  Though I can’t say I necessarily enjoy it, I can say it’s not too bad.
  • My car. It’s been a needy bugger. It has had a few repairs lately and needs one more, to the tune of almost $600 to replace an EGR (?!?) and hopefully stop the dreaded squeal it makes. My dreams have been filled with visions of Toyota Priuses (Pri-ii? What is a plural Prius?). Three people I know have them and can’t stop raving about their gas mileage. I’m definitely jealous.
  • Grad school. This has been on the back burner for a while, but I really need to dig in and apply. First, to see if I even get in, and second, to see what kind of financial aid I’m looking at. I’d also like to interview a few people who have done different programs, to see what the pros and cons may be.
  • No thrifting. I hate thrift stores in October. Full of junky Halloween costumes and crazed teenagers. I’m going on a thrifting hiatus for the month, even though it pains me.
  • New Color. Hair, that is. Couldn’t stand my roots growing out any longer, so I went for golden chestnut brown/auburn. It’s fall. Sounds good.

Well that was fun. I’ll be back later to share this weekend. I have some fun plans in store. Can’t wait!

Madison

I did something out of the norm: I took vacation days! And went on vacation!

One of the few pictures we took,on top of the Monona Terrace with the capitol building in the background.

Now granted, we didn’t go very far (Madison is about 5.5 hours from our house in Central MN), but we had a great time! The entire time Pete and I were pleasantly surprised by what the city had to offer.

Our favorite parts of vacation:

  • King sized bed. KING SIZED BED.
  • How accessible the state capitol was: Four roads in the city drive right up to the steps, it’s in the heart of the city, and people were always out and about around its grounds and steps. We even saw a couple taking wedding pictures there on Saturday morning.
  • The HUGE Farmers Market on Saturday. It circled the entire capitol. I was bummed we didn’t live closer because I wanted to buy ALL THE PRODUCE!!
  • Totally walkable. We walked everywhere. To the lakes, down State Street, to campus, around the lakes again. We were so lucky we had beautiful, sweltery-hot weather to walk around in.
  • But we would have loved to have had our bikes. There is a bike rental thingy with multiple stations around town, but we didn’t try it out. Also, if you lived in Madison and didn’t have a bike or moped, you were pretty unlucky. They were EVERYWHERE. Hundreds, thousands of bikes and mopeds. I’ve never seen so many. Not even in Paris.
  • Coffee. Lots of coffee drinking on this trip.
  • The houses and buildings all had character and charm. Granted, many were run-down college houses, but still! The porches and balconies. Lovely.
  • We had lots to do. Evening fireworks on Saturday, and a concert at the UW-Madison Memorial Union. We saw The Promise Ring for free (made me feel like I was in high school again) and drank beers on the plaza. We also visited two art museums. The Chazen Museum of Art was unbelievable and the Madison Museum of Modern Art had some interesting exhibitions as well.
  • Our last breakfast at the Johnson Public House. Intellegentsia Coffee made to order/pour-over style, delish breakfast sandwiches, cool art, and Pet Sounds on in the background. The perfect coffee shop. We’re kicking ourselves that we didn’t bring any beans home with us. Drats.

On one of our lakeshore walks I snapped these pictures of our feet. Pete had no idea I even took that picture of his feet or that the blue ghost grafitti was on the ground – ha!

All in all we had a great time together, and I think the time away from home was refreshing for both of us. It definitely solidified how important vacations are for our mental health. I’m excited to plan more weekend excursions together!

Friday Recap

Hello friends. Yes, yes, I’m alive. Sorry to keep prefacing my writing with “Hey, don’t worry, I didn’t croak between now and the last time you read.” This week was very busy – lots going on at work with events, staying late to work said events, and getting things together for designing our upcoming season brochure. I also work 3 shifts at my part-time job this weekend, and have to pack for a fun work-ish related Minneapolis get-a-way thing this Monday-Wednesday. I’m also planning to get a few workouts in, as well as going home to see The Hunger Games with my mom and Auntie. Phew!

Here are a few things I’ve been into this week:

1.) I sent my sister in France a link to these lovely ladies, The Staves. I like to think that this could be the Vetsch sisters if:

  • A) we could sing (At least sing that well. Gosh, they’re good!)
  • B) we were British, and
  • C) we all had dark, long, flowing locks.

Oh well. Can’t win them all. I hope you enjoy their beautiful harmonies and lovely video!

2.) My new haircut. This is actually an older picture (from about a month ago for our staff head shots) but my hair looks pretty similar since I only went in for a trim. Every time I go in for a cut, I’m more and more convinced that I’ll be rockin’ short hair for quite a while. I love it. In fact, I’m toying with going shorter. Look at my “Hair” Pinboard on Pinterest for some of my inspiration ideas for my next cut! Shorty short for summer. Whee!

3.) Running! I’ve been running quite a bit, and am up to approximately 5.5 miles as my longest run. Last week I hit a total of 23 miles pounded out. I’m still painfully slow, but I feel SO good after sweating for 60+ minutes. I’ve been watching episodes of The Biggest Loser on my phone via Hulu+, and I have to say… those trainers really know what they’re doing. It’s so motivating to push through those last miles while all of the contestants are doing their “last chance workout.” I’m kind of addicted.

Anyway, I’m actually headed BACK to work tonight, but this time as an audience member. We’re presenting this cool group called PROJECT Trio. They’re a classical trio of flute, bass, and cello, but they stir things up by putting a hip-hop/pop/jazz spin on traditional songs. Their flutist can beatbox. It’s insane! Check him out here:

Anyway, I actually have some posts planned for the next few days, so I won’t leave you hanging like I did in my last post. Oopsy! :)

weekend recap

Hello all! I had a pretty busy, yet relaxing weekend. It didn’t seem like I did much, but now that I’m typing, it all kind of came back to me. It looks like I actually did get quite a bit done!

Because I worked both nights this weekend at the Paramount, Pete and I had a Saturday day-date at our favorite place in the world – Bravo Burritos! If you’ve never been (which I’m guessing a huge majority of people who read this have not) please make it a goal of yours to get there. We both ate smothered burritos, which is a deviation from our normal fare. My personal faves are the chicken verde super burrito and the vegetarian smothered. Holy yum.

I spent a little time shopping this weekend, too. I hit up Old Navy, which for me is kind of weird. I haven’t set foot in that store in years and years, but for some reason… I think I saw a cute printed shirt somewhere online and was inspired to go? Anyway, the store was so bright and full of fun, trendy prints for spring. Not usually my thing to buy mass-produced trendy stuff, but eh. I couldn’t pass up this bird-print silky blouse.

And of course, I made the compulsory stop at Goodwill to atone for my big-box retailer outing. The place was overrun with screaming children and poorly managed carts getting in the way of everything. Let’s just say I wasn’t feeling very patient. But I found a set of dishes I really liked, but did not purchase. The pattern of the stoneware reminds me of my Grandma Mar’s dishes from her old house. A call to my sisters: Maim, Maddie, do you agree with me or remember? Or am I just crazy?

Today I found out my hair is still JUST long enough to curl, so I had fun with that, too. I also bought new nail polish and had to give it a go. The basecoat is a neat matte polish, but I covered it up with a new sparkle topcoat. Kind of pointless to use a matte underneath a glossy coat, but oh well. I feel pretty fancy now!

Pete drove to the Twin Cities for rehearsal this afternoon, so Leo and I spent some time hanging out around the house. I discovered a row of Thin Mints in the freezer (I think we stashed them to prevent ourselves from scarfing them down) and had a delish afternoon snack (not the whole row, don’t worry!). Leo has been a lunatic pawing at the back door to go outside, so I’ve obliged him with little 3-minute breaks. It’s about all he can take before he’s jumping up and down at the door to come back inside.

I spent the rest of my weekend watching silly movies, working out, and setting up a painting studio in our vacant downstairs bathroom. Yes, I’ll paint soon enough! Having a semi-permanent setup is half the battle. It needed to be somewhere I could get messy and leave things set up without the cat getting into it. Luckily, we never use the downstairs bathroom, and it has linoleum floors and a closeable door. Now I just need to figure out what to paint – I’ll keep you updated on my progress!

How was your weekend?

Currently…

- Painting rocks for a fun student-employee appreciation event at work

How was your weekend? What are you currently up to?

B-Day Shenanigans

Thanks again to everyone for the birthday wishes! I had a WONDERFUL weekend full of friends, food, and family! I am so so lucky and thankful to be surrounded by awesome people who made me feel so special!

Birthday cookie at 2am. Photo by my talented friend.

Well, my weekend went pretty much as planned, except I was SO TIRED (but not hungover, hurray) on Saturday that I didn’t get around to much except for hanging out with my family and eating pizza. That’s totally okay by me, though!

Friday was a blissful day off of work: Christmas shopping, latte drinking, meeting up with my grandparents for a late lunch, selling my old iPhone (holy cash-ola!), and then driving to the Twin Cities to hang with my girlfriends. They were so wonderful and generous – telling me to bring nothing and proceeding to make delicious cocktails and food the entire night – I was seriously spoiled! We chatted until 1am, when we got a call from another friend across town. We cabbed it up across the city and ended up at a fun holiday house party until 4am. I haven’t been out that late in AGES. Probably not since I studied abroad in London four years ago! After a few hours of sleep, we all met up again and went out for huevos rancheros and spicy bloody mary’s. Best weekend I’ve had in a VERY VERY long time!

Like I said, Saturday was hanging out and Sunday was a bit of work, some more Christmas shopping, and a birthday dinner with Pete and my folks. A great end to a great weekend.

So my mom told me I’m not allowed any more birthday-ness, which is definitely true. I think I played the “hey it’s my birthday” card more than my fair share this weekend. So now I’m totally committed to the holidays and getting ready for family get-togethers, meeting up with more of my friends, and the New Year’s party Pete and I are throwing. Lots to think about and lots to get ready for! I’m going to try to post some of my DIY party decoration adventures in the next few days, so be on the look out!

look who’s a quarter-century old!

This girl! That’s right, today I turn the big 25 and I’m pretty excited. I love my birthday. I’ve been celebrating it for the last few days, actually. Pete took me out on a dinner-date on Wednesday because he has gigs all weekend and it was the only time we have together at night. On Thursday I picked up my birthday present from Pete: a new iPhone 4S!! And today I’m taking the entire day off of work (why not?!).

And here are my birthday plans:

1. Lounge around, drink coffee and read blogs ALL MORNING LONG.
2. Go for a run
3. Get ready for the day and pack my bags for an overnight in the Twin Cities
4. Run a few errands
5. Meet up with grandma & grandpa for a late lunch (they’re in town seeing the Oak Ridge Boys matinee at the theater I work at part-time)
6. Sell my old iPhone to a dude on Craigslist (Don’t worry, Pete is going with me!)
7. Grab some coffee and hit the road for the Twin Cities
8. Meet up with my girlfriends at one of their new places in Loring Park – cannot wait!
9. Appetizers and drinks, and a night out on the town!

Saturday Plans: Keeping it low-key. Maybe hang out with my mom on my way back to STC. Pick up some of the last gifts on my Christmas list, spend the rest of the day lounging, painting my nails, drinking too much coffee, listening to holiday music and making decorations for our New Year’s party. (You can see some of my DIY ideas as recent “pins” HERE).

Sunday Plans: Meet up with my parents & Pete for a belated birthday dinner at my uncle’s restaurant. Can’t wait – the food there is AMAZING!

Looks like it’s going to be a fun weekend. I like to draw out my birthday a bit, because it leads right up into Christmas and makes me feel more festive and excited about this time of year. One thing I’m not excited about: we don’t have any snow (at least not yet, can you believe it?)! Come on Minnesota! There’s always snow on my birthday :)

I love the 80s

Well last night kind of felt like Halloween. Mostly because I got to wear a costume to work! The theater I work at part-time held their annual fundraiser/gala, and this year’s theme was Back to the 80′s. The staff wore 80′s garb and we decorated the entire building in rubix cubes, Michael Jackson posters, and tons of neon STUFF. I worked as a bartender last night, pouring cocktails for the event sponsors in a Miami Vice themed room, with flamingos on the walls and Billy Ocean on the tapedeck. It was kind of awesome. To wrap up the night, a local 80′s cover band took to the theater stage and played some awesome 80′s tunes. The crowd had a blast – they were dancing in the aisles, and a lot of them dressed up 80′s too!

Here’s what I wore:Really, really embarrassing, right?. I pulled this dress from my parent’s attic. My mom has been stashing this thing for years. I think it’s mostly because it’s just over-the-top hideous and is too funny to throw away. My sisters and I take it down from time to time just to laugh at it. My mother wore this masterpiece in 1988 (maybe 89?) as a bridesmaid in my aunt’s wedding. Can you believe it?! The dress is made out of some kind of super heavy upholstery fabric. There’s tulle in the shoulders to make them more poofy, and an attached cummerbund (apparently that’s the right way to spell what I thought was “cumberbund.” Who knew?) and bow cutouts in the back. In the spirit of the 80′s, I made my own giant hair bow and accessorized with some colorful hoop earrings and super intense pink blush.

Just for posterity’s sake, I thought I’d share this adorable photo. In 1988/89 I was 2 (or three) and had my OWN mini version of the dress above! Here’s a picture of me with my cousins who were the flower girl and ring bearer. You can’t see all of my dress, but it looks just like Danielle’s with the blue on top, more hideous floral print on the bottom, and a big pink bow. Like my glasses? (Pete says I look like a cartoon character, which I think is kind of accurate. This picture makes me crack up laughing every time I look at it).

Do you have any crazy fashion relics in your closet? It was fun to wear this for just a night. I still have such a hard time wrapping my mind around why my aunt thought these dresses were a good idea. Oh well, it was the 80′s!
