Hair Today, Gone Tuesday

You guys. I haven’t had a haircut since AUGUST 27th. AUGUST!!! Seven weeks between haircuts for a pixie-cut length gal is absolutely unheard of. I am embarrassed for my hair. Tuesday afternoon cannot come soon enough. This “duck tail” thing going on at the nape of my neck is driving me CRAZY.

So what should I do? It’s in that weird stage of regrowth. Long enough to earnestly start growing it out into an asymmetrical thing or a short bob. Short enough to easily convert back into a super cropped pixie. I just don’t know.

All pictures from my (mostly short) hair Pinboard. There are lots more to choose from there, if you want to go look and/or advise me on something else!

  1. Longer, asymmetrical, funky. No, my hair is not that curly, so not sure if it’d work.
  2. Short. Shorty short. This would mean a huge chop, which I’m okay with.
  3. LONGER. This girl is adorable (click HERE to visit her blog).
  4. Long front fringe. I could totally make this work. My bangs are very long.
  5. I guess this one is like #4, just not as drastically short.

So what’s the verdict? I get my hair cut on Tuesday. Let me know!!

Happy Fall

Hi friends. Looks like I’m on a one post a month spree, huh?

I hope all is well. Things are busy around here, as always. The weather just took a turn toward real MN fall. We did have a few Indian summer nights and beautiful, sunny, vivid-leaf days. But now the wind has picked up, the leaves area bit more brown, and the air is MUCH cooler. I kind of like it, but I’m a jeans and sweater person at the core of my being, so this weather is kind of perfect.

Some pictures of life lately. I did manage to buy some mums and gourds for the front stoop. They’re now living in my garage for fear of frost. Not sure when the cold front will break (if at all) but it was nice to enjoy them even for a couple of weeks.

I also had the opportunity to stretch my artsy skills by painting the co-op windows for fall. The big art festival in town was last weekend. I learned how to operate the cash register, and I finally became a full-fledged member after only a year of supporting them but not buying in. I feel much happier now with my membership investment firmly in their hands. It was just in time for their capital campaign (which I helped design the theme for – yay)!

Other things that are new in my life:

  • YOGA. Yoga yoga yoga! I’ve been going to the new studio in downtown St. Cloud for a whole month now. I wake up at 5:45am most mornings for the 6:30am strong class. I’ll write a separate post on it soon. I have a lot of things to say about my experiences on the mat!
  • Plasma. I started donating plasma recently after a coworker let on about how easy (and profitable) it was. I was initially a little skeeved out by the process (it made me feel very anxious), but I’ve calmed down.  Though I can’t say I necessarily enjoy it, I can say it’s not too bad.
  • My car. It’s been a needy bugger. It has had a few repairs lately and needs one more, to the tune of almost $600 to replace an EGR (?!?) and hopefully stop the dreaded squeal it makes. My dreams have been filled with visions of Toyota Priuses (Pri-ii? What is a plural Prius?). Three people I know have them and can’t stop raving about their gas mileage. I’m definitely jealous.
  • Grad school. This has been on the back burner for a while, but I really need to dig in and apply. First, to see if I even get in, and second, to see what kind of financial aid I’m looking at. I’d also like to interview a few people who have done different programs, to see what the pros and cons may be.
  • No thrifting. I hate thrift stores in October. Full of junky Halloween costumes and crazed teenagers. I’m going on a thrifting hiatus for the month, even though it pains me.
  • New Color. Hair, that is. Couldn’t stand my roots growing out any longer, so I went for golden chestnut brown/auburn. It’s fall. Sounds good.

Well that was fun. I’ll be back later to share this weekend. I have some fun plans in store. Can’t wait!

Why, Hello Again!

I’m Back!

After a TWO MONTH hiatus, I can officially say that I’m back to blogging! Hurray!

So what was the big deal, you ask? After running into some computer-nerdy glitches (changing hosting sites, updating WordPress themes without child themes therefore losing all of my coding… aka what makes my website look pretty, and blah blah blah) I was pretty down on my blog. It was stripped of its prettiness, and I was really bummed that I had run into a dead end and wouldn’t be able to put anything back together. It turns out that the solution was much easier than I thought, so I was able to get everything back and running in less than a week once I finally put my nose to it. Silly me!

And of course lots of other things happened in the past two months. I really don’t want to bore anyone with a bulleted list as I’m apt to do, so I’ll crank out a few posts over the coming weeks with what’s new around here. As you can see above, I chopped off all of my hair (and yes, that is a Caboodle in the background). I got the new ‘do in mid-April, and I am enjoying the pixie cut now that we have some hot summer weather under our belts here in MN.

I’ve got some thrifty finds, DIY projects, upcoming vacations, and 26-Before-26 goals to blog about. I’m pretty excited to have my little corner of the internet back! Thanks for sticking with me!

Friday Recap

Hello friends. Yes, yes, I’m alive. Sorry to keep prefacing my writing with “Hey, don’t worry, I didn’t croak between now and the last time you read.” This week was very busy – lots going on at work with events, staying late to work said events, and getting things together for designing our upcoming season brochure. I also work 3 shifts at my part-time job this weekend, and have to pack for a fun work-ish related Minneapolis get-a-way thing this Monday-Wednesday. I’m also planning to get a few workouts in, as well as going home to see The Hunger Games with my mom and Auntie. Phew!

Here are a few things I’ve been into this week:

1.) I sent my sister in France a link to these lovely ladies, The Staves. I like to think that this could be the Vetsch sisters if:

  • A) we could sing (At least sing that well. Gosh, they’re good!)
  • B) we were British, and
  • C) we all had dark, long, flowing locks.

Oh well. Can’t win them all. I hope you enjoy their beautiful harmonies and lovely video!

2.) My new haircut. This is actually an older picture (from about a month ago for our staff head shots) but my hair looks pretty similar since I only went in for a trim. Every time I go in for a cut, I’m more and more convinced that I’ll be rockin’ short hair for quite a while. I love it. In fact, I’m toying with going shorter. Look at my “Hair” Pinboard on Pinterest for some of my inspiration ideas for my next cut! Shorty short for summer. Whee!

3.) Running! I’ve been running quite a bit, and am up to approximately 5.5 miles as my longest run. Last week I hit a total of 23 miles pounded out. I’m still painfully slow, but I feel SO good after sweating for 60+ minutes. I’ve been watching episodes of The Biggest Loser on my phone via Hulu+, and I have to say… those trainers really know what they’re doing. It’s so motivating to push through those last miles while all of the contestants are doing their “last chance workout.” I’m kind of addicted.

Anyway, I’m actually headed BACK to work tonight, but this time as an audience member. We’re presenting this cool group called PROJECT Trio. They’re a classical trio of flute, bass, and cello, but they stir things up by putting a hip-hop/pop/jazz spin on traditional songs. Their flutist can beatbox. It’s insane! Check him out here:

Anyway, I actually have some posts planned for the next few days, so I won’t leave you hanging like I did in my last post. Oopsy! :)

weekend recap

Hello all! I had a pretty busy, yet relaxing weekend. It didn’t seem like I did much, but now that I’m typing, it all kind of came back to me. It looks like I actually did get quite a bit done!

Because I worked both nights this weekend at the Paramount, Pete and I had a Saturday day-date at our favorite place in the world – Bravo Burritos! If you’ve never been (which I’m guessing a huge majority of people who read this have not) please make it a goal of yours to get there. We both ate smothered burritos, which is a deviation from our normal fare. My personal faves are the chicken verde super burrito and the vegetarian smothered. Holy yum.

I spent a little time shopping this weekend, too. I hit up Old Navy, which for me is kind of weird. I haven’t set foot in that store in years and years, but for some reason… I think I saw a cute printed shirt somewhere online and was inspired to go? Anyway, the store was so bright and full of fun, trendy prints for spring. Not usually my thing to buy mass-produced trendy stuff, but eh. I couldn’t pass up this bird-print silky blouse.

And of course, I made the compulsory stop at Goodwill to atone for my big-box retailer outing. The place was overrun with screaming children and poorly managed carts getting in the way of everything. Let’s just say I wasn’t feeling very patient. But I found a set of dishes I really liked, but did not purchase. The pattern of the stoneware reminds me of my Grandma Mar’s dishes from her old house. A call to my sisters: Maim, Maddie, do you agree with me or remember? Or am I just crazy?

Today I found out my hair is still JUST long enough to curl, so I had fun with that, too. I also bought new nail polish and had to give it a go. The basecoat is a neat matte polish, but I covered it up with a new sparkle topcoat. Kind of pointless to use a matte underneath a glossy coat, but oh well. I feel pretty fancy now!

Pete drove to the Twin Cities for rehearsal this afternoon, so Leo and I spent some time hanging out around the house. I discovered a row of Thin Mints in the freezer (I think we stashed them to prevent ourselves from scarfing them down) and had a delish afternoon snack (not the whole row, don’t worry!). Leo has been a lunatic pawing at the back door to go outside, so I’ve obliged him with little 3-minute breaks. It’s about all he can take before he’s jumping up and down at the door to come back inside.

I spent the rest of my weekend watching silly movies, working out, and setting up a painting studio in our vacant downstairs bathroom. Yes, I’ll paint soon enough! Having a semi-permanent setup is half the battle. It needed to be somewhere I could get messy and leave things set up without the cat getting into it. Luckily, we never use the downstairs bathroom, and it has linoleum floors and a closeable door. Now I just need to figure out what to paint – I’ll keep you updated on my progress!

How was your weekend?

Red is the color of my life

Looky looky! Someone changed things up. I’m no longer blonde! I went in on Friday morning for a haircut, and my (amazing) stylist was commenting on how fast my hair was growing. Stylist: “Wow, we only colored your hair a month ago and you already have an inch of (dark) regrowth! We’ll have to get on that again soon!”

To which I thought (in my head): “Stylist, I love you. But $70 a month for blonde highlights? Um… no thanks. I’ll go back to my $4 box of Revlon Medium Auburn and do it myself.” And so I did. Last night. At 10:30 at night.

And I like it! What do you think?

Post-dye job late last night

Today. Curly.

It’s a little more copper penny than I would have liked, but for going from pretty darn near white-blonde to this was very lucky! I’m happy I didn’t botch it! The color feels pretty natural for me and has been easy to get used to because I spent almost all four years of college as a redhead. Actually, a few people who I met in college only ever KNEW me as a redhead and thought it was natural. Here’s a pic of me with red hair back when I studied abroad in England. Man those Brits were ruthless with the ginger jokes. They couldn’t believe that anyone would ever CHOOSE to be a redhead. Oh well. It was fun!

It’s a welcome change, and hopefully I’ll keep it up! Now I’ve gotta decide whether or not to grow it out or keep it short. Decisions, decisions!

Blue Curly Sue

The weather has been holding up really well here in MN (the eight inches of snow I shoveled a week or two ago that looked like the picture below has melted away and left us with and even colder looking, barren, dull terrain). Which I guess I can’t complain about too much because hey, my car still starts and it’s still warm enough to not have to bust out my down parka. Win!

Anyway, weather aside, this outfit felt very “me” today. Just the right balance of thrift and new, and in some of my favorite staple colors: blue, gray, and brown. The brassy gold shell on my belt had me a little thrown off because it could read as really gawdy, but I love love LOVED the colors in the tapestry band. So pairing it with a more neutral, subdued palate made it work better in my book.

Something else a little new: I’ve been wearing my hair curly every few days. Just to shake things up I guess. I really like having something different to do with my hair, since I’m kind of limited due to its length. I’m always so in between with what I want, which definitely gets frustrating. Still haven’t decided if my next haircut will be a trim so I can grow it long enough to tie back, or whether I’ll go back to the short and funky asymmetrical style I used to have. Decisions, decisions!

Dress: Old Navy via my thrifty Auntie (I doubt she paid more than $5 for it – go Auntie!)
Sweater: Target clearance / Sea shell tapestry belt: Savers $2.99
Boots: definitely NOT clearance, but I love them!

Well, the night is still young, and I’ve got lots to accomplish in the next few hours. That, and I’m playing nurse to a sick boyfriend. Hope he recovers in time for his massive run of shows and gigs this December! 20+ shows in the next four weeks. Yikes! And I thought I was busy!
